AMD FSR 4 is coming to portable devices by the end of 2026

AMD plans to expand FSR 4 technology to portable devices, gaming laptops, and APUs. According to Jack Huynh, who leads AMD's consumer computing and graphics group, this will happen by the end of 2026.

Huynh shared this with the Korean media outlet The Elec. According to him, AMD will expand FSR 4, a machine learning-based technology, from graphics cards across its entire product lineup. The company intends to pursue two directions: deploying it on existing APUs while also offering it in new product lines.

AMD FSR 4 and portable devices: what we know so far

The Elec reports that new APUs and a lightweight version of FSR 4 for APUs will hit the market by the end of the year. However, it remains unclear whether this lightweight version will appear directly on portable devices.

Previously, AMD promised FSR 4 only for desktop graphics cards, not for APUs designed for laptops and portable devices. Furthermore, in June, the company did not officially guarantee that older portable devices would receive the technology.

Performance as a prerequisite

David McAfee from AMD previously stated to Tom's Guide that the company wants to ensure the experience and quality are right, and that FSR 4 requires sufficient computing power within a product. According to The Verge, this means some older laptop chips will meet this requirement, while others for portable devices may not.

Valve has collaborated with AMD to bring FSR 4 to console-class APUs for Steam Machine, but has not yet committed to doing so for portable Steam Deck devices.

AMD did not immediately respond to a request from The Verge to clarify Huynh's statement.
