Paramount Pictures is preparing a live-action film based on the world of the game Cyberpunk 2077. The news was reported by Deadline, and IGN and Polygon also wrote about the planned movie. The announcement came on October 8, 2025.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is behind the Transformers films, will produce. Polish studio CD Projekt Red, the creator of the original game, is also involved in the film. When the movie will hit theaters is not yet clear.
Paramount's Cyberpunk 2077 film does not yet have a release date
The studio has not revealed the name of the screenwriter or director, and the cast is unknown as well. According to IGN and Polygon, it is therefore unclear who will star in the film.
"We are excited that Paramount will be our future partner, sharing our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk brand. We will gladly share more details at the right time," said CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michał Nowakowski.
The game has sold more than 40 million copies
Cyberpunk 2077 was released in 2020 and, despite a troubled launch, became a commercial hit, selling more than 40 million copies. According to Deadline, the Phantom Liberty expansion was purchased by 15 million players.
The story takes place in the fictional megacity of Night City in California. The player takes on the role of mercenary V, who acquires a biochip containing the consciousness of rock star and terrorist Johnny Silverhand. In the game, he was portrayed by Keanu Reeves, and Idris Elba joined the cast in the Phantom Liberty expansion (IGN).
The Cyberpunk brand is expanding beyond games
The anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners from studio Trigger premiered on Netflix in 2022, and a second season will be released on October 20, according to Polygon. A sequel to the game is also in development. The studio announced it in 2022 as Project Orion, renamed it Cyberpunk 2 in May 2025, and it is now in pre-production. According to The Verge, 184 people are working on it.
Meanwhile, Paramount completed its merger with Warner Bros. Discovery under the Skydance brand (The Verge). The studio is also preparing a film based on the game Call of Duty, planned for 2028, and a Street Fighter movie, which will arrive in theaters on October 16.
