Gears of War E-Day review: a great game at the wrong time

Gears of War: E-Day is, according to reviews, a confident action game, but it arrives during a turbulent period for Xbox. This prequel to one of the brand’s most iconic titles is set 14 years before the original Gears of War and puts players in the role of Marcus Fenix. Twenty years have passed since the first game’s release.

Gears of War E-Day review: a return to the proven formula

Reviews from indexnews.com and wilsonsmedia.com describe it as a cover-based shooter that emphasizes immediacy and tension. The game draws comparisons to James Cameron’s films, particularly Aliens. The environment is largely linear but features side missions and large-scale set pieces where cities crumble under attacks by massive creatures. Quieter moments unfold in dark tunnels or a misty cemetery.

The story revolves around the so-called Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde launched an assault on the planet Sera with the goal of wiping out humanity. Enemies emerge from holes in the ground and an underground tunnel network. Fenix is part of an elite squad of Gears. During missions, players attack enemy strongholds, escort supply convoys, and search for survivors in the ruins.

Lines that define the series

According to reviews, the narrative is intentionally straightforward, with dialogue packed with cheesy one-liners and combat banter. Critics highlight lines like“Rest in pieces” or“Looks dead to me,” which Fenix and his squadmates deliver while taking out enemies.

Launching during a challenging time for Xbox

The game releases on October 6 for PC and Xbox. One review notes it arrives during a“reboot” for the Xbox brand: new CEO Asha Sharma has cut around 3,200 jobs and is reshaping how studios operate. After Forza and Halo appeared on PlayStation 5, E-Day is seen as signaling a return to Xbox console exclusives. Developer The Coalition faced at least one round of layoffs before launch, and employees fear more may follow.
