Steam achievement sets: Valve splits achievements into sets

The Steam platform is getting a new feature for achievements. Valve has named it Steam achievement sets, allowing developers to split rewards for the base game and its DLC into separate groups. The feature is available in the latest beta version of the Steam client, as reported by gg.deals, dev.ua, and futures.rs.

What Steam achievement sets change

Each set has its own progress tracker. Players who complete a set will earn a trophy on their profile for finishing it. Steam will also support seasonal sets, which developers can later archive.

“In games that support sets, you still unlock achievements by playing the game as usual. But when you browse what you have unlocked afterward, Steam will break the long list of game achievements into the developer-created sets, making it easier to see what you have completed and to find other related achievements you can unlock next,” Valve stated. On the temporary nature of sets, the company added:“We think there are a lot of fun ways games can take advantage of the temporary nature this can add, such as adding achievements to season-based games or enabling time-limited holiday achievements.”

Which games already support sets

According to Valve, the feature is already implemented in several titles:

  • Against the Storm
  • Age of Wonders 4
  • American Truck Simulator
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4
  • Crusader Kings III
  • DREDGE
  • Euro Truck Simulator 2
  • Forza Horizon 5
  • Flock Around
  • He is Coming
  • LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Portal 2
  • PowerWash Simulator
  • PowerWash Simulator 2
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Victoria 3

New achievements page and friend comparisons

Valve is also updating the achievements page on Steam. According to The Verge, it will display a summary of overall progress, progress within individual sets, and details about each achievement. Players can compare their results with up to three friends, as noted by gg.deals and dev.ua.

Achievements tied to DLC will not count toward overall completion until the player has access to that DLC, according to gg.deals and dev.ua. Developers can archive achievements that are no longer obtainable. The gg.deals website adds that completed sets will remain completed even if developers later add new achievements.

According to dev.ua, Valve offers two types of sets: one for the main game, available to all players, and one for DLC, which requires purchase. The website also mentions that Valve has renamed the Perfect Games tab to Completed. It will now include games where players have finished individual sets, not just all achievements. Additionally, game pages in the store and library will indicate whether a game supports sets, as reported by dev.ua.
