Xbox will publish Physint, a new action-espionage game from Hideo Kojima, the creator of the Metal Gear series. The announcement comes after PlayStation unexpectedly canceled the project. Physint is the second upcoming game from Kojima Productions to be published by Xbox, alongside the horror title OD.
Kojima Describes the Unexpected Project Cancellation
Kojima stated on his X platform account that the studio received an unexpected cancellation notice from PlayStation Studios in mid-June 2026. Over the following three months, they searched for a new publisher. "We found a partner in Xbox who shares our vision for the future, and we decided to reunite with them," Kojima said. Development of Physint, which he describes as a "genre-defining action-espionage title," continues.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma commented, "Creators should have the freedom to choose where and how they bring their ideas to life. We are honored that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to collaborate with Kojima Productions on Physint. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to foster at Xbox." According to Polygon, discussions between Kojima and Sharma have been ongoing since her appointment in February.
Xbox to Publish Physint Alongside OD
PlayStation called the decision a "difficult one to step away from the collaboration with Kojima Productions" and insisted that their relationship remains strong. Sony published both previous Kojima Productions games in the Death Stranding series. The partnership for Physint was initially announced by Sony at the beginning of 2024.
In its announcement, Xbox stated that the collaboration with Kojima Productions "will extend beyond games" and will also involve film and television. Kojima Productions announced plans for film and TV projects back in 2021, resulting so far in two adaptations of Death Stranding: the animated spin-off Mosquito and a live-action adaptation directed by the filmmaker behind Pig.
When Will Physint Be Released?
Physint is not expected to release before 2030. According to Complex.com, casting is already underway, and motion capture is set to begin later this year. OD, the horror game co-created with Jordan Peele, has no release date yet but is expected to arrive before Physint. Analysts cited by Polygon estimate sales of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach at two million copies, with 1.6 million on PS5. The original Death Stranding sold five million copies in a comparable period and reached 19 million players over five years.
